How do you ensure that you do maximize the value of every truckload of wheat that you sell?

1. The first step is to become informed of all of buyers’ prices on offer.
2. The second and most important step is to have a system of comparing them accurately, as the bin grade, variety, protein, screenings and moisture change from load to load.

The drawback with this process is that it can take several hours per day, including numerous phone calls to buyers, to get an update on any changes to their prices.

One solution to this problem is a program called WheatCalc, which has been designed to give wheat growers anywhere in Australia accurate daily pricing information for every truckload of wheat delivered.

When you are fully informed of what prices are being paid in the market, you can then set the price that you wish to receive when you are negotiating with buyers.

There can be a lot of variability not only in prices from day to day but also within the types of cash and pool contracts on offer. Already we are seeing a large number of wheat contracts switching from paying full increments to flat pricing or protein only. The ramification for growers is that it becomes increasingly difficult to select which buyer really has the highest price.

A few examples using prices available for 12/10/2006 are shown below, with the ABB Grain contract paying full increments for protein, screenings and moisture, the Louis Dreyfus contract paying protein only and the Brooks Grain contract being a flat price.
